Bodegas Juan Gil obtains the WfCP+ certification

21 / 06 / 2022

Bodegas Juan Gil has obtained the certification WfCP plus, which requires a greater demand for the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions, recognition that only three wineries have throughout Spain.

Wineries who voluntarily want to access this category, in addition to meeting the requirements of the WfCP scheme, must verify additional conditions and the indexes to be met are very strict. Indexes that Bodegas Juan Gil has exceeded by far.

These successes are no accident. Being generous, sharing and knowing how to manage resources are intrinsic values to being a large family and are part of winery’s DNA since its inception. This has been proved by the construction of Juan Gil Winery, which began back in 2000 in Jumilla, already born with the idea of building a winery that would integrate into its environment and would be sustainably energetically. A winery whose aim is a construction system able to assume a thermal difference of 15 degrees without energy expenditure, something fundamental in an area of strong thermal contrasts such as Jumilla.

At present, Bodegas Juan Gil is the only winery in Murcia with certification for waste management. Currently, their vermicompost project allows them to transform organic waste from winemaking into more than 300,000 kg of vermicompost.

On the other hand, the implementation of a solar park allows them to generate 1.4 MW, which represents much more energy than the consumption of all wineries from Viñas Familia Gil group. Viñas Familia Gil already have three wineries and a logistics warehouse which are self-sufficient energetically.
These processes implemented by Bodegas Juan Gil are a demonstration and another example that profitability and sustainability are compatible. They have also been recognised at European level. At the end of 2018 the winery was selected as one of the most relevant projects and with greater impact in Spain by the line of EAGF Funds (European Agricultural Guarantee Fund) and received the visit of a delegation of the European Commission, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Region of Murcia.
